Expositional Preaching

Since preaching and teaching are central to the ministries of Grace Community Bible Church, we should define what kind of preaching and teaching we do. When we refer to preaching and teaching, we specifically mean, “expository preaching.” Expository preaching can be defined as explaining Scripture by its single meaning in context, helping to clarify what is difficult to grasp, and making clear application to the text so the truth of the passage can be applied to the life of the hearer (Nehemiah 8:8). Usually a book of the Bible is selected, and a verse-by-verse teaching method is applied. Using the historical-grammatical-literal method of interpretation assures contextual accuracy. This style of preaching will be the norm and will be used throughout GCBC’s ministry.

A topical sermon can, however, be expositional. From time to time the topical method will be chosen for the edification of the church and series will be started to meet the need. The topic will be dealt with through a passage of Scripture and be addressed through expositional preaching. Throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament, the prophets and apostles were given messages to deliver, not a freedom to go and speak whatever they pleased. Much topical preaching leads to verse plucking and making Scripture say what the person speaking wants it to say. Exposition preaching does maintain the integrity of the Word. In other words, it gives the authority to the Scriptures, not to the cleverness of man. We are committed to the all sufficient Word of God. The expositional sermon allows God’s word to speak clearly. Paul said, “For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God” (Acts 20:27). We believe that the Spirit of God accompanies and empowers expository preaching for the glory of God and the exaltation of His Son, Jesus Christ. Grace Community Church Bible believes God blesses expositional preaching because it does not withhold truth from the believer, but teaches all that God intended. We fully admit that the depth of the Bible is limitless and we will never run out of truth to be preached on, even if the same text is preached over and over. The Word of God is a direct reflection of His glory.
